Creating a Handyout
The handyout creation form lets you name your handyout, add a description, review credit costs, and confirm generation. If you lack credits you can purchase them or join the waitlist.
Handyout creation and extension — multi-step wizard
Complete guide to the handyout creation and edit form. Covers the step-by-step wizard (Analytics, Translations, Extension), analytics tier pricing, translation selection via a multi-select with inline search, the wheel-style extension date picker, animated order summary totals, confirmation dialog, and post-action navigation — saving or extending returns you to the Presentation detail page.
Creating and managing a handyout
Handyouts are generated from presentations you have already uploaded. The form is reached from the Presentation detail page by clicking Create Handyout, or via the settings icon when a handyout already exists. The form works in two modes — create (no handyout yet) and edit (handyout already exists).
The form is split into a scrollable left column for settings and a live slide preview on the right that auto-advances through your slides as you work.
Step indicator
Below the handyout name field, a progress bar and numbered step buttons show your position in the wizard. Each step shows a filled circle when complete, an outlined circle for the current step, and a greyed indicator for steps not yet reached.
Create mode steps:
| Step | Name | What you do here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Analytics | Choose your analytics tier |
| 2 | Translations | Select audience translations |
Edit mode steps:
| Step | Name | What you do here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Analytics | Upgrade your analytics tier |
| 2 | Translations | Add or review translations |
| 3 | Extension | Extend your handyout's availability window |
In edit mode you can jump to any step by clicking its number. In create mode you can only move forward to steps you have already visited.
Handyout name field
A required text field pre-filled from your presentation filename (file extension stripped). Capped at 50 characters; a live counter shows characters remaining. The form cannot be submitted with an empty name.
Step 1 — Analytics tier
Choose the level of insight you want for this handyout. The tier can be upgraded at any time, even after the handyout has been shared.
| Tier | Cost | Included metrics |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | Free (included) | Total views and avg. time, reactions overview, slide popularity |
| Advanced | Per handyout (see card) | Per-slide dwell time, full comments feed, furthest slide reached |
| Premium | Per handyout (see card) | Module interactions, per-slide module data, everything in Advanced |
Click any tier card to select it. The currently active tier (edit mode) is marked with a Current badge.
Step 2 — Translations
Choose which translations your handyout will be available in. All translations are free for now. You can add more translations after sharing.
Two controls appear for translation selection:
- A multi-select control at the top of the step. Your selected translations appear as removable tags inside the trigger. A built-in search field lets you type to filter the list before opening the full dropdown. Click a language name to add it; click the X on a tag to remove it.
- A language grid below showing all supported languages as clickable tiles for quick visual selection.
Both controls stay in sync — selecting a translation in either one updates the other. At least one translation must remain selected at all times.
Supported languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic.
Step 3 — Extension (edit mode only)
This step appears only when editing an existing handyout.
- The current availability window is shown as a text description — for example, "Your handyout is available from 1 Jul to 31 Jul. Pick a new end date to extend."
- Two wheel-style date pickers (From and To) let you scroll to select a new extension range. Spin the day, month, and year wheels to pick a date. The selectable range starts the day after the current expiry.
- A full-month calendar also appears for visual date selection. Dates already covered by the current window and expiry dates of your other handyouts appear as unavailable.
- Extending costs 1 credit per day in the selected extension range.
Order summary
An order summary panel below the step area shows a live breakdown of all costs. All numeric values animate smoothly when they change, so you can see the totals update as you adjust settings.
Create mode example:
| Line | Value |
|---|---|
| N slides | N credits |
| Analytics · Basic / Advanced / Premium | Free or €X.XX |
| Translations · N | Free |
| Total | Free, or N credits, or N credits + €X.XX |
| Your balance | N credits |
| Balance after | N credits (shown when credits will be used) |
Edit mode example:
| Line | Value |
|---|---|
| Original cost | N credits · paid (greyed out) |
| Analytics · Tier | Free / Included / €X.XX |
| Extension · +N days | N credits or No change |
| Translations · N | Free |
| Total | Free, or N credits, or €X.XX |
| Your balance | N credits |
| Balance after | N credits (shown when credits will be used) |
If your credit balance is short, the summary shows how many credits are missing and the equivalent euro cost that will be charged at checkout.
Terms of Service (create mode)
A Terms of Service checkbox must be ticked before creation can proceed. Its placement depends on your credit situation:
- If you have enough credits (confirmation dialog opens): the checkbox appears inside the confirmation dialog.
- If you do not have enough credits (checkout redirect): the checkbox appears at the bottom of the last step before you are sent to Stripe.
Navigation buttons
| Button | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| Back | Returns to the previous step. Disabled on the first step. |
| Next | Advances to the next step. |
| Final CTA (last step) | Label changes based on what will happen (see below). |
Final CTA labels:
| Situation | Button label |
|---|---|
| Create, sufficient credits | Create Handyout — N credits |
| Create, insufficient credits | Create Handyout & pay €X.XX |
| Edit, save title / description only | Save changes |
| Edit, extend (with credits) | Extend |
| Edit, upgrade analytics tier | Unlock Analytics |
| Edit, extend and upgrade | Extend & Unlock Analytics & pay €X.XX |
Confirmation dialog (create mode, sufficient credits)
When you have enough credits, clicking the final CTA opens a confirmation dialog showing the handyout title, slide count, analytics tier and its cost, total credit cost, and a Terms of Service checkbox. Clicking Create Handyout — N credits starts generation. During creation the dialog is locked — it unlocks after the handyout is ready, then redirects you to the Editor.
After saving or extending (edit mode)
After saving changes or extending, you are returned to the Presentation detail page for that specific presentation. If an analytics upgrade or extension required a purchase, Stripe checkout opens first. After payment a success toast confirms the outcome.
Checkout success dialog
After a successful Stripe checkout, a checkout success dialog appears automatically anywhere in the dashboard. You do not need to navigate back to the handyout form to see it.
Jumping directly to a specific form step via URL
The handyout creation and edit form reads a step URL parameter so that links from other parts of the dashboard — or from the guided tour — can open the form directly on the Analytics, Translations, or Extension step.
Opening the form on a specific step
The handyout setup form supports a step URL parameter that causes the form to open directly on a named step rather than always starting on step 1.
| URL parameter value | Step opened |
|---|---|
?step=analytics | Analytics tier selection |
?step=translations | Translation selection |
?step=extension | Extend availability (edit mode only) |
If the parameter is absent or does not match a valid step name, the form opens on step 1 as normal. In edit mode, any step can be targeted. In create mode, only steps that have already been visited are reachable directly.
This is most commonly used by the in-app guided tour, which can direct you to a specific part of the form to highlight a particular setting. You can also bookmark or share a URL that opens the form at the extension step, for example, without the recipient needing to click through the earlier steps first.
What you see when payments are not yet available
Describes the reduced wizard experience shown to users when paid features (analytics tiers and handyout extensions) are not yet enabled. Covers which steps are hidden, what the CTA shows, and what to expect when full access becomes available.
In some situations — for example, during early access or when paid features are not yet enabled for your account — the handyout setup form shows a reduced version of the wizard. The steps and buttons adapt automatically; you do not need to do anything special.
Which steps are affected
When payments are unavailable, the Analytics and Extension steps are hidden. The wizard shows only the Translations step in both create and edit mode.
What the CTA button shows
When payments are unavailable and your credit balance is not enough to cover creation:
- The final action button reads Payments coming soon and is disabled — you cannot proceed with the current balance.
- If you already have enough credits to cover the cost, creation works normally: the button shows the credit cost and you can confirm as usual.
What this means for analytics and extension
- Your handyout is created with the Basic analytics tier automatically — no selection is needed or possible during the reduced wizard.
- The Extension step (which lets you extend the handyout's availability window for credits) is not shown. You can return to the edit form once full access is enabled to add an extension.
When full access becomes available
Once payment processing is enabled for your account, the wizard automatically shows all steps, analytics tier cards with live pricing, and the extension calendar. No action is needed on your part — opening the form again will present the complete experience.
