Fewer handouts on the printer.
A digital handout is not automatically green. It helps when it replaces paper that would be overprinted, reprinted or thrown away. Here is what the sources support, and where they do not.

What actually holds up. None of them depends on a carbon calculation.
No overprinting.
Print runs are sized for attendance plus a buffer, and leftovers become waste. A QR code has no print run. In a field study with 108 teachers, encouraging on-screen reading cut printing by 45 to 51 percent.1
Update instead of reprint.
A typo in print turns the whole batch into waste. In a handyout you fix it once. Pharma is moving the same way with e-labeling through 2D codes.2
Readable for more people.
Zoom, screen readers, high contrast and translation work out of the box, which readers with low vision or dyslexia often depend on.4 PDFs often fall short: in one study, 97 percent of articles had no image alt text.3
The EAA and Germany's BFSG point the same way but often do not apply to B2B talks, so we see this as a quality promise, not a compliance claim.5,6
Cleaner recycling.
Inks, toner and adhesives have to be removed before fibres can become paper again, and recyclers report this is getting harder.7 Paper that is never printed never needs deinking.
A number, not an estimate.
handyout counts how often each handout is opened, so you can report real reach instead of guessing.
Views are not avoided prints. Compare against your own previous print volume.

The scale of office printing. Context, not a promise of what one handyout saves.
- of paper consumed in Germany per year11
- ~19 million t
- of it graphic paper for printing and copying11
- 5.9 million t
- recycled share of office paper11
- 18%
- A4 sheets used by city administrations and schools in the Papieratlas 202211
- 2.8 billion
Illustrative estimate: one presenter, one year
- sheets of A4 not printed
- 5,000
- of paper
- 25 kg
- CO₂e from paper production
- 19 kg
20 talks with 50 attendees, a 30-slide deck at 3 slides per page, double-sided, if every attendee would otherwise get a printed copy.
751 kg CO₂e per tonne of virgin office paper, cradle to gate. Printing, transport and reading on a phone are not included. An order of magnitude, not a measured saving.12 (p. 45)

Where the case gets weaker. Digital is not free.
Digital has a footprint too.
Devices, networks and data centres use energy we do not net out here. Whether digitalisation helps the climate depends on how it is used.8,9
Paperless does not happen by itself.
New tools have often added to paper use.10 If you still print and add a QR code on top, nothing is saved.
Views are not avoided prints.
Analytics show how often a handout was opened, not how many sheets you would otherwise have printed.
No carbon figure per handyout.
It depends on too many assumptions, which is why the estimate above stays illustrative.
